Pow Wow Comes of Age

In June we held the twenty-first Pow Wow in Montana. This is also the twentieth anniversary of the Little Big Horn chapter of FCF. Terry Wapiti Compton reminds us of a bit of the history of Rangers, Pow Wow and FCF in Montana.

The 1st Pow Wow was held at Kings Hill campground.  The late Rev. Johnnie Barnes, first Royal Rangers national commander, was the speaker.

There were five churches present for that first Pow Wow with 47 people in attendance.  Keith Elder, Rich Roybal, Joe Knudsen, Dave Price, Ron Garvin, Jerry Hamlin, Len Ventling and myself were some of the leaders there.

For the first Pow Wow Keith took half the state and I took the other half and we called all of the Assemblies of God churches in Montana to get the Pow Wow started.

The first Pow Wow at Ranger Mountain was in 1987.

It's unclear when Rangers started in Montana, but I know it was going in the late 60's.  Rangers started nationally in 1962, founded by Johnnie Barnes.

I was the first FCF inductee in Montana.  Keith had been inducted in Oklahoma, so he and Don Franklin our speaker initiated me at Many Pines campground down the hill from King's Hill.  This happened in 1978.  This also was the year that I gave up being the District Commander and became the FCF president and Keith became District Commander.
